■Abstract
This open seminar draws on cases from three countries (UK & South Africa) including Japan, to discuss “intellectual humility” as a key concept for doctoral education in the context of supervising graduate research. Intellectual humility is framed not as mere modesty, but as an intellectual virtue that involves realistically evaluating one’s own strengths and limitations while remaining open to others’ perspectives and divergent views. Its significance is examined for both supervisors and doctoral students. More specifically, the seminar introduces a framework that understands intellectual humility as a balance between intellectual arrogance and intellectual servility, and offers implications for doctoral supervision from three angles: (1) approaches that treat uncertainty and impasses not as “failure” but as opportunities for learning, (2) ways of engaging that soften power asymmetries while fostering critical dialogue, and (3) feedback and supervisory practices that nurture graduate students’ agency and independence as researchers. Researchers in Australia and current doctoral students will share their views. We discuss how supervision practices mindful of intellectual humility can promote cognitive and personal growth for both students and supervisors.
