■Abstract
In the past two decades, US college faculty careers and work have changed considerably, and these changes have, in many ways, accelerated since COVID-19. We have observed an erosion of academic freedom and faculty autonomy and dramatic shifts to part-time and short-term contract employment. In this lecture, I will describe these changes and discuss a recent survey conducted with colleagues from NC State University looking at the effects of COVID-19 on faculty work and promotion plans. I will also explore the future of faculty work and the long-term implications restructuring faculty careers may have on US higher education.
