Abstract: In recent decades, young universities have reshaped global higher education and challenged traditional hierarchies. Using Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024 data, this study analyzes 228 EU and 271 Asian universities to examine whether they display strategic diversity or convergence. Four distinct profiles emerge among EU institutions—High-Quality Comprehensive, Balanced Development, International-Focused, and Resource-Constrained—reflecting varied approaches to research, teaching, internationalization, and industry engagement, with distinct performance outcomes. Similar patterns appear in Asia. The study challenges convergence assumptions, emphasizing strategic diversity’s role in strengthening higher education ecosystems and informing policy and leadership decisions.

BIO of Dr. YANG PO　杨钋 博士
Dr. Po Yang is an associate professor with tenure, chair of Department of Economics of Education and Administration, at the Graduate School of Education, Peking University. Her main research areas include economics of education, education finance, and vocational education. She has been working as consultant for the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Ford Foundation. She received research funding from China National Science Foundation, China National Social Science Foundation, and China Development Research Foundation and etc. She has published widely in peer reviewed journals such as Higher Education, Studies in Higher Education, Higher Education Policy, China Economic Review, Post-Soviet Affairs, Journal of Aging & Social Policy, Cambridge Journal of Education, Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management. She has published two books and edited more than 10 books in Chinese and in English.
