Abstract:Japanese universities have adopted multifaceted missions to nurture global talent. In particular, this chapter aims to deepen our understanding of recent developments in outbound study-abroad programmes in Japanese higher education, particularly in response to successive top-down government policy changes around 2010. Furthermore, while existing research primarily focused on inbound international students’ experiences, this chapter explores the experiences of Japanese students in outbound study-abroad programmes—an area that remains relatively unknown. In addition, this chapter sheds light on the challenges and potential opportunities facing outbound study-abroad programmes within Japanese higher education institutions, emphasising their importance and the need for robust ongoing scholarly investigation into their outcomes and implications.
