■Abstract

[Lecture 1]
Invisible Student Engagement Among International Students
(Dr. DANGENI, Newcastle University, UK)
Research with international students has become a subfield in the internationalisation of higher education, yet their agentic contributions and achievements are rarely acknowledged. In this seminar, a longitudinal, qualitative study is presented to critically examine the multidimensional student engagement of international Chinese students at UK universities. The factors identified for enhancing student engagement provide suggestions for key stakeholders on how to prepare and support international students.

[Lecture 2]
Student agency and international higher education
(Dr. Kelsey INOUYE, University of Oxford, UK)
This presentation draws from a 2023 systematic review on agency amongst international students in higher education. The review analyzed 51 papers published between 2000 and 2020 that focused on student perspectives, finding that in the literature, agency may appear as a research object, a conceptual framework, or a finding, and is often not fully theorized. Finally, a synthesis of existing conceptualizations of agency is presented.
