■Abstract
As the institutional environment, the influence of the government and the market is getting higher in order to guarantee the quality of the university and academics. The changes in academic environments reshape academics’ identities and activities on research, teaching and knowledge transfer. Academics have paid more attention to journal publication and citation as well as securing external funding. Competence-based learning and innovative teaching approaches have acquired significant attention and emerged as key concepts in quality assurance and higher education institutions. Universities try to develop new networks within the private and public sectors, and in a globalized society, universities experience tensions between nationalism and higher education internationalization.

This open seminar aims to explore new demands on research, teaching and knowledge transfer, and current challenges in Higher Education. Dr. Lee will present “the changing pattern of academic research activities focusing on academics’ publication and citation”. Dr. Braun will explore “competence-based quality assurance of teaching and learning in Higher Education”. Dr. Tang will present “University knowledge exchange in a global city: perspectives from Academic Profession”. Assistant professor Hammond will explore “the dynamics and tensions between higher education and nationalism in the context of Asia”. This seminar will expand our understanding of the new challenges in Higher Education. This wider understanding of higher education will provide practical and theoretical grounds for higher education policy.
