■Abstract
Unlike the universities in Japan and the western countries, the general education reform of Chinese universities took place after the move toward mass higher education. The current undergraduate education in the United States, Japan and other countries is rooted in liberal education (KyouYou) from the elite higher education era. But for China, the elite higher education has lost its cultural essence since 1952, and its main body was the highly specialized and practical education. Therefore, its general education reform in the 21 century is neither a succession nor an expansion. In terms of elite education and mass education, tradition and innovation, teachers and courses, structure and quality, Chinese universities have encountered great challenges. Fudan University, Peking University, Tsinghua University and other top Chinese universities have made their own efforts, and Technological, industrial, and teaching universities are also seeking a reorientation of undergraduate education in this trend.
