Abstract:
In response to guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and others, universities are now required to provide education on “research ethics” to faculty members and students. Researchers in related fields (medical research ethics, bioethics, applied ethics such as engineering ethics, etc.) have begun to become involved in research integrity, and at present a very limited number of researchers are recognized as experts in the field. In addition, with regard to the establishment, management, and maintenance of research integrity systems within universities, the staff in charge of research support departments have managed to respond to “a sudden and unexpected request”, and the assignment of personnel such as research integrity officers, advisors, and ombudsmen, which are obligatory in some foreign countries, is not a standard practice in Japanese universities and is just beginning to be discussed in a nascent, exploratory manner.
However, there is no active involvement from the field of higher education in these “educational efforts” and “organizational formation and management” issues related to research integrity. Although it is of course recognized as a problem, it cannot be said to be a situation in which concrete efforts are being made to address it seriously.
In light of the above background, we would like this year’s meeting of researchers to serve as a commemorative meeting to mark the 50th anniversary of the Center’s founding last year and to move toward a new phase, and to create a place where the two fields of research integrity and higher education, which have not had much contact with each other, can begin to move forward together.
