■Abstract
Doctoral education is regarded as the initial stage of professional socialization in academia, in which academic identity is constructed through a complex process of professional, cognitive, and affective development. As a marginalized group in the doctoral training programs of Korean universities, Chinese international doctoral students in humanities and social sciences experienced a unique development of academic identity compared with their domestic peers. This study aims to characterize their academic identity development process through an ethnographic approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants balancing their gender and discipline.
