These lessons can help,\u201d Dr Sakurai comments on researcher independence across doctoral, early-, and mid-career stages. He and his colleague shares three key themes: the path towards researcher independence is inherently \u201cbumpy,\u201d with progress regularly interrupted by setbacks; researchers must strategically take ownership of their own development; and seeking validation from peers and supervisors is essential for building a sense of independence.
