The Trump administration is disrupting the traditional international order and practices, such as its unilateralist tariff policy, but it is also frequently issuing executive orders that are digging into university autonomy and academic freedom. Harvard University has responded with a lawsuit, and the cuts to Columbia University have been met with critical statements from 15 leading figures in American constitutional law academia, as well as from over 300 American university presidents and others. The question of how academic freedom in the United States can be generated and responsive to contemporary issues is extremely significant.　Professor David M. Rabban of the University of Texas, one of the originators of the Constitutional Law Scholars’ Statement, has been invited to Japan by Professor Masahiko Kinoshita of Kobe University.
Professor Rabban is one of the originators of the Constitutional Law Scholars’ Statement.
Professor Rabban is a leading authority on American constitutional theory and published a book titled Academic Freedom last year from Harvard University Press. In this lecture, Professor Rabban will review the historical and theoretical development of academic freedom and its application to university autonomy in the U.S. He will also analyze the involvement of the federal and state governments in universities in the modern era.

■Note
・Participation fee is free.
・Registration is open until 6pm on Monday, 9 June 2025 (JST).
・Internet access and a camera/microphone device required to participate online.
・Use your full name as your personal meeting ID when you enter the meeting room.
