Academic Freedom in Japanese Universities<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0Venue<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.office.otsuka.tsukuba.ac.jp\/location\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Tsukuba, Tokyo Campus<\/a>\u30003F\u3000Lecture Room320<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0Language<br \/>Lecture is delivered in English, Discussion is held in English and Japanese<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0MC<br \/>OBA, Jun (Hiroshima University)\u3000HATA, Takashi (professor emeritus of Tohoku &amp; Hiroshima University)\u3000<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0Lecturers<br \/>Edward Vickers (Kyushu university)<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0Abstract<br \/>Academic freedom is in crisis worldwide, with frequent infringements on the research and teaching of faculty and on university autonomy.<br \/>In the United States, Republican governors are putting pressure on universities, and in Hungary, university programs on sexual diversity have been banned.There have been more than 2,700 violations of freedom in the past 12 years.<br \/>In Japan, the authority of the Faculty Council, which is the key to guaranteeing the status of university faculty members, has been reduced, and there have been cases where universities do not guarantee faculty members a laboratory.<br \/>However, it cannot be said that there is a sufficient understanding or sense of crisis among the university faculty as well as society regarding the issue of academic freedom.
