\nThe movement for accountability in American Higher Education stoked interest in the assessment of student learning in key liberal arts objectives like critical thinking, creativity and written communication. This keynote will examine how institutions of higher education in the US responded to the movement for accountability using standardized tests and the more recent impetus to use non-standardized, course embedded approaches to assess student learning. It will highlight the practical lessons we learned in the process and our continued exploration for high impact practices when designing classroom assignments, pedagogies and assessments that address student learning in key liberal arts objectives including critical thinking, creativity and written communication.<\/p>\n

\nDr. Mark Nicholas, is Executive Director for Institutional Assessment and Accreditation at Framingham State University, Massachusetts. Since 2006, he has been actively involved with the assessment of student learning at the national level and has served on several state-wide taskforces focused on implementing and assessing key liberal arts objectives. His research interests focus on critical thinking as a process and outcome in higher education. He has published on critical thinking and faculty development, accountability and assessment in higher education, research methodologies, academic program review and assignment design. Dr. Nicholas has delivered keynote addresses at over ten assessment, accreditation and research conferences and meetings in the United States. He is regularly invited to conduct faculty development and pre-conference workshops at the AAC&U and Assessment Institute conferences. Dr. Nicholas\u2019s research attracts grant funding from prestigious funders. The most recent award was for $1M from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to create transparent curricular and pedagogical pathways in STEM for underserved and underrepresented students. His passion, however, is still in the classroom, where he teaches on social inequalities in education and research methods in the social sciences.<\/p>\n
